Relocating to Dallas? Here’s How to Make Some Fast Friends

Moving to a completely new city can be a bit nerve-wracking. Starting over is never easy – especially when you don’t know anyone. Making new friends can sometimes feel like being the lonely kid on the playground. It’s awkward, intimidating and downright uncomfortable. The good news is, Dallas is huge, so you’re sure to find a few folks that are a good match with your personality and lifestyle. If you’re planning on relocating to Dallas, here are a few tips to help jumpstart your social life.

Shop in-person.

Yes, we know same-day shipping from Amazon Prime is kickass. But if you do all your shopping sitting on the couch in your skivvies, you’re never going to meet anyone new. You have to get out there and hit a few brick-and-mortar stores. (Don’t worry – there are a TON of shopping options in just about every Dallas neighborhood.) You’ll meet new people AND you’ll be supporting local businesses. (Just don’t forget to get dressed first.)

Walk a dog.

If there’s one thing the Dallas area is known for, besides rodeos and artery-clogging slabs of beef, it’s our affinity for four-legged companions. Not only is there at least one dog park in almost every neighborhood, but many restaurants proudly welcome furry guests. Taking Fido along on your next outing can be a great conversation starter. Don’t have a dog? Why not become a part-time dog walker with Wag or Rover? You’ll meet new people (and pets) and make some extra cash while you’re at it.

Hit up a happy hour.

If you’re not used to hitting the bar by yourself, this may feel a bit awkward at first, but trust us – it’s one of the easiest and fastest ways to make new friends. And boy, does Dallas have its fair share of happy hour activities. In fact, almost every bar and restaurant features some type of special deal to attract a crowd. Check out a few in your neighborhood and take a chance. Even if you don’t meet your new BFF, you’ll at least get a good buzz on the cheap.

Get physical.

Dallas is home to a number of awesome parks and recreational areas, including The Katy Trail and Klyde Warren Park. And when the sun isn’t scorching the earth, the weather can be quite nice for heading outdoors and enjoying a little fresh air. Whether you’re a runner, cyclist or just some dude hoping to meet a few new peeps in a brand new city, hitting the trail or getting involved in one of the many free outdoor recreational activities is where it’s at.

Do something you love (or try something new).

If you’ve been in the city for a while and still haven’t made much headway in the friends department, it may be time to kick things up a notch. If there’s a particular hobby you enjoy, then join a local group or meetup that’s dedicated to that niche. You’ll already have at least one thing in common. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not sign up for a class doing something you’ve never done before? You’ll learn something new and meet some new people in the process. Now that’s a win-win!
