1) Can I afford it?

3) Are all the amenities in the building/in my preferred apartment in good, working condition?

One of the worst things that can happen to you when you sign a lease without thoroughly checking your apartment is to suddenly realize that you’d have to spend a fortune on repairs and restoration.Make sure to inspect everything, and we mean EVERYTHING, inside your soon-to-be-leased apartment. Check if the water’s working, if there are holes in the wall or ceiling, if all the electrical sockets are working, if any windows are broken, and so on. Don’t be afraid to be thorough — after all, you ARE signing up for something long-term, and once you affix your signature on your contract, that apartment becomes your responsibility.

4) Do I completely understand the rules and regulations of this place?

As negative as it may sound, always consider the worst-case scenario. What if an emergency happens, and you need to call for professional assistance? Is someone there available who can help you out, or are you basically on your own when things go awry? Make sure that there are handymen or repairmen whom you can call in case something suddenly breaks in your apartment. It also falls upon your shoulders to familiarize yourself with the ups, downs, ins, and outs of your lease contract. If there’s anything there that you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask!

5) Is the general atmosphere happy and positive?

You may think that this is not so important, but you would be terribly mistaken. You wouldn’t want to live in a place with no decent lighting — imagine waking up each day and not catching any sunshine! — or one that’s full of noisy neighbors. It doesn’t hurt to consider if your satisfaction in finding an apartment to lease will translate into happiness when you’re actually living in it.

How to Pack for Your Upcoming Summer Trip

We know you’re excited to spend your summer enjoying the sights, happenings, and must-visit sites in, near, and around uptown Dallas. Before you even leave your apartment, though, one of the first things you need to consider is how you’ll fit all your stuff when you make the trip.

That’s why we’ve compiled a handful of simple but effective packing tips to make sure that you don’t forget anything you need (or end up lugging around some very heavy bags).

Prepare a list of what you’ll need.

Without a list to guide you, you’ll inevitably end up trying to stuff more things than you’ll actually use inside your bags. Stick to the basics — your toothbrush, your first aid kit, your charger, and so on — and take this opportunity to identify what you WON’T be bringing, so that you won’t suddenly decide to add more to your luggage at the last minute.

Plan what you’ll wear.

More often than not, unprepared travellers end up packing more clothes than they’ll actually be using. Consider the weather when you pack your clothes, and try to stick to a theme (i.e. clothes that work well when you mix and match them).

To save extra space, roll everything instead of folding and piling them on top of each other. Not only will this leave you with more room for your other stuff, but this will also keep your clothes wrinkle-free!

Use ziplock bags for categorizing and organizing.

You can place small objects (such as keys and cards) or electronics (such as wires and phone chargers) inside resealable plastic bags to protect them and keep them in one place (and make them easier to find) during your trip.

Safeguard your stuff from spills with the right packing techniques.

One of the worst things to discover in your luggage is your shampoo or lotion smeared all over your clothes and gadgets because you forgot to spill-proof everything. Take the lid off your bottles and cover the opening of the bottle with cling wrap before screwing the cap back on.

You can also take extra precautionary measures by storing your liquid containers in double-layer plastic bags.

Don’t put your money in your wallet.

Putting your cash and valuables in obvious places is just about the quickest way to get robbed. Instead, be resourceful — use an empty shampoo bottle or lotion container, for instance, to keep your money, so that thieves won’t know what to get from your bag if they ever manage to open it without you knowing.

Think about what you REALLY need to carry on your person.

This is particularly important if you’re going to take a long trip via airplane. Evaluate what you want to include in your carry-on — things that you absolutely need, but also won’t give you a hard time carrying.
Limit your carry-on stuff to your laptop or your preferred handheld entertainment device, a bottle of water, earphones, and a book.

Know exactly what you want to do before you leave.

Do your research! Create a schedule and look up the important places you’ll need to hit up while you’re on your trip. If possible, identify stores, restaurants, medical institutions, and other important landmarks.

In today’s Dallas Apartment Guide, we’ll be talking about how you can spice up the look of your current living space.

Truth be told, it doesn’t matter if you’re living in one of the many Uptown Dallas apartments available for lease, or if you’re residing in an entirely different state. How your living space looks still matters, as it has a direct effect on your level of comfort and quality of life.

However, you might find yourself challenged or limited by the fact that you don’t own the place you’re living in. Don’t fret, though, as there are ways to breathe life into your Dallas apartment without breaking any of your leasing terms OR spending a ton of money.

1.Invest in modular pieces.

Keeping in mind that you’re not living in a permanent space, you need to plan your decorations with mobility and ease of packing or replacement in mind.

If you want a simple way to brighten up the colors in your apartment or simply give your eyes something new and relaxing to enjoy, a new coat of paint on your walls and furniture will go a long way. Of course, you’ll need to get permission from your landlords first before you go to town with that paintbrush, but believe us, some will even welcome the idea of you adding a touch of life to your leased apartment.

If you can’t repaint your walls, you can at least paint your furniture and make them look brand new. Pick a color that pops, but goes well with your interiors.

6. Hang up a painting or display your collection.

A well-placed oil painting will work wonders on even the most drab of walls. Pick your favorite painting and a nice frame to go with it, and hang it up a wall that needs some livening up. If you collect statues, figurines, or any other display items, find a space for them, like a bookshelf or a tabletop, and arrange them so that you can see all of them in their limited-edition glory.

Bonus tip: Get yourself a rug to hide any imperfections on your floor. It’s a cheap and simple solution that adds a touch of sophistication to your living space as well.

Congrats…you’ve found the
Dallas apartment of your dreams. You’re moving up in the world, and in the process, will be leaving your old Dallas rental property behind. Preparing as much as possible in advance and knowing what to expect ahead of time can help improve your chances of getting your security deposit back and also facilitate a smooth and uneventful transition from one place to another. That being said, here are 7 things to add to your moving to-do list.

Get yourself organized. Before you find yourself buried in boxes and running out of precious time, make a point to get organized about the moving process. Create a checklist of everything you need to do in your current Dallas rental in order to get out on time and without incident, as well as what will need to be taken care of in the interim, such as packing and switching over utilities.

Go over your lease. Not all Dallas apartments are created equal. One property manager might be fine with a 30 day notice in writing, while others might require longer lead-time. Another lease might mandate that certain things are restored to how they were prior to your tenancy, such as paint color. Getting your hard-earned security deposit back depends on sticking to the legally binding document you signed, so understand ahead of time what’s expected of you and what your rights are.

Get your clean on. At the very least, you’ll need to make sure your current Dallas apartment is clean as a whistle before moving that last box out the door and handing over the keys. Allow yourself adequate time following the physical move to go back and conduct a thorough cleaning. If there are any repairs that need to be made, such as patching holes where pictures were hung, put those on your list as well.

Move everything out.
