Night Life in Dallas – Where to Be When the Sun Goes Down

Dallas may be known for its hot summer days, but there’s also a lot to experience when the stars come out. Whether you’re into laid back cocktails and conversations with friends, singing your heart out at karaoke, rocking out to some live music or dancing the night away at a local club, Dallas Apartment Locators‘ got the scoop on where the best hot spots are for Dallas night life. Check out a few of our favorites below.

Inwood Tavern

Having been in business for more than half a century, it’s safe to say that The Tavern, as it’s affectionately referred to, has become somewhat of a neighborhood institution. If you prefer your drinks in red solo cups, you’ll dig the backyard vibe here. Mingle with the locals inside or head out for some fresh air on the spacious patio. And while you’re there, don’t forget to try one of their famous root beer shots.

The Foundry

Located in North Oak Cliff, this casual bar specializes in “simple drinks and strong pours.” Beer drinkers can also choose from an impressive selection of micro-brews. And, of course, there are plenty of happy-hour and other specials, including $3 drafts on Thursday nights and live music every Friday and Saturday night. Pull up a stool at the indoor bar or hang out on what’s considered to be one of the best outdoor patios in the area. Bonus: it’s dog-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged bestie as well.

The Lizard Lounge

If tearing up the dancefloor is how you prefer to unwind, the multi-level Lizard Lounge is the place to be. There are a ton of different events to choose from, including everything from country performances to neo-gothic rock band concerts to full-on music festivals – often happening at the same time. There are also a number of specialty events, like Emo Night. Best of all, tickets are relatively affordable and drinks are surprisingly cheap.

The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

If you’re into beer, the Flying Saucer should be on your list of favorite hangouts. This unique establishment has been serving up suds since 1995, and with a current lineup that features more than 200 frothy options, it’s easily one of the best places in the city to enjoy a cold one (or three). If you’re a real go-getter, you can join the UFO Club and become an official Flying Saucer “BeerKnurd.” Sample all 200+ beers and your name will be added to the ring of honor. Sweet!

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated nightlife experience, the SODA Bar deserves a mention. Located atop the NYLO South Side Hotel, this trendy rooftop bar offers some pretty spectacular views of the Dallas skyline. It also features a fire pit and an infinity pool. And, of course, there are plenty of drink and food options to choose from as well. Fair warning: this place is definitely one of the hottest spots in the city, so if you want to snag a prime spot on the deck, you’ll have to get there early.

Of course, this is just a tiny sampling of the many nightlife options available in and around the Dallas area. Why not head out tonight and discover a few of your own favorites?

5 Best Pet-Friendly Neighborhoods in DFW

Did you know there are more than 600,000 dogs and cats living in the Dallas area? It’s no surprise, then, that Dallasites view “pet-friendly” as one of the most important features in a Dallas apartment. And, as in every city, there are some neighborhoods that are more conducive to four-legged residents than others. If you’re looking for some new digs for you and your furry family member to settle down, here are five neighborhoods to consider.

The neighborhood of Uptown is one of the liveliest in Dallas. Not only is it a great place to meet up with friends for brunch or to grab a cocktail after work, but it also happens to be an awesome place to spend time with your four-legged companion as well. For instance, Katy Trail offers 30 acres of scenic, well-maintained paths, perfect for taking walks or runs with your best friend. The area is also home to Mutts Canine Cantina, an off-leash dog park that features a restaurant with some great “yappy” hour specials (their words, not ours).

When it comes to pet-friendly living, the suburb of Plano ranks near the top of the list. In fact, WalletHub lists Plano as #15 amongst 100 other cities in the U.S. based on factors such as pet health and wellness, as well as outdoor pet-friendliness. Dogs are allowed at many local restaurants in the area – just keep an eye out for the posted signs of approval. A few of our personal favorites include the Katy Trail Outpost and Lazy Dog. Looking to get out and enjoy some fresh air? Jack Carter Dog Park offers 2 acres for your pooch to explore.

If you’ve set your sights on one of the many luxury apartments in Downtown Dallas, you won’t be disappointed, and neither will your pet. That’s because the area is easily considered one of the most pet-welcoming in the city. There are plenty of dog parks throughout the downtown area, including a designated section of Klyde Warren Park known as My Best Friend’s Park. There’s also Bark Park Central, which offers 1.5 acres of pet-friendly space.

Victory Park

The neighborhood of Victory Park is known for its walkability, both for those with two legs and four. And since it’s located conveniently at the end of Katy Trail, you can squeeze in a visit there as well. Victory Park is also home to a number of bars and restaurants that have patios which welcome furry companions, including The Grove at Harwood. If you haven’t been there yet, check it out, and be sure to try one of their famous snow cones while you’re there.

Oak Lawn

Situated less than a mile from Uptown, the Oak Lawn neighborhood offers some of the nicest pet-friendly perks in all of Dallas (not to mention affordability in terms of Dallas apartments). Many area restaurants boast spacious outdoor patios that are large enough to accommodate dogs of all sizes. If you dig Tex-Mex cuisine, Café Brazil is where it’s at, but there are plenty of other options to choose from as well. Nearby NorthBark Dog Park offers everything from trails and an expansive lawn to doggie showers and more.

As you can see, Dallas is home to many pet-friendly locations, activities and destinations. If you and your four-legged friend are looking for a new place to live in one of the neighborhoods listed above, we’ve got an impressive number of pet-approved Dallas apartments to choose from. 5 Best Places in Uptown to Grab a Drink After Work

You work your ass off all day. You deserve to kick back and enjoy a nice, refreshing cocktail once quitting time rolls around. Thankfully, there are tons of great bars and restaurants in and around the Uptown, Dallas area – many of them conveniently located within walking distance. Whether you’re planning on commiserating with your favorite co-workers, you’re meeting up with friends after a long, hard day, or you’re stopping in for a quick drink on your own, here are a few of our favorite local watering holes.

If you’re looking for a great place to hang with great happy hour drink specials, you’ll want to swing by Parliament. The somewhat inconspicuous locale provides for a laid back, comfortable atmosphere and the impressive list of drink options prepared by expert bartenders makes it well-worth the visit. Happy hour is Monday through Saturday 5-8pm or any day that it’s raining.

Bowen House

Have a more distinguished drink palette? Sit back and let the mixologists at Bowen House whip up some craft cocktails for you and your crew. The only thing cooler than the drinks here is the chill vibe. Hungry? They’ve got you covered. We recommend the steak tar tar for an appetizer and the vegetarian-friendly zucchini pasta. Happy hour is from 4-7 with a variety of drink and snack options.

Atwater Alley

When it comes to hidden gems, the Atwater Alley is where it’s at. Don’t try to find a fancy sign. Just head down the alley behind Henry’s Majestic and look for the door with double A’s on it (one right side up, one upside down). Despite the modern drink options and creative bar staff, you’ll feel like you just stumbled back in time into a 1920’s speakeasy. Trust us – this one’s an experience you have to try.

Kennedy Room

This place bills itself as a “neighborhood bar,” but in our opinion, the atmosphere is more like visiting friends than sitting at a bar – especially with their plush leather couches and antique upholstered high back chairs. It’s a truly unique place to throw a few back, shoot some pool and enjoy some delicious and surprisingly affordable drink and food specials.

Upside West Village

We’d be remiss if we failed to include Upside West Village in our list of “best cocktail bars in Uptown.” While their menu and drink specials may be on the pricy side, it’s the magnificent views from their rooftop location that make this hot spot one worth visiting. Heaters and a fire pit will keep you warm on chilly nights and the covered canopy allows for great views of the Dallas skyline regardless of weather.

If you live or work in the Uptown area of Dallas, you owe it to yourself to give these five awesome places a try. Perfect for that after-work cocktail, meeting up with friends, a late-night date night or even hitting the town solo. Cheers!

How to Make Your New Dallas Apartment Feel Like Home

Few things in the world can beat the euphoria of moving into a new apartment. After all the packing and transporting, there’s a certain comfort that comes with you just being able to sit down and enjoy the fact that you’ve successfully relocated to Dallas.

Of course, it’ll only take you about 10 minutes before you start itching for home.

Don’t worry, though! It doesn’t require much effort to transform your new (albeit temporary) living space into a place you could truly call home. We’ve even prepared a handy guide, just for you!

Before anything else: Talk to your landlord first!

You certainly wouldn’t want to be making any changes to your Dallas apartment that would end up violating your contract and incur severe penalties. Before you even so much as plan to move a table or hang a picture, clarify what you can and can’t do.

Once you’re done with that, you can begin setting design goals for your apartment.

Some helpful tips before you begin

  • Define your budget for decorating your apartment, so that you can plan what to buy and avoid overspending.
  • Figure out if you would have the time to do all the renovations in the first place — you don’t want to accidentally end up with a stockroom of unused decorations instead of a comfy apartment!
  • Identify which areas of your apartment you DON’T want to change. Which places in your living space are fine, just the way they are?
  • Remember: When you leave, you’re going to have to take all of that stuff down! Don’t do anything complicated or change anything in a major way that you’d have to take down eventually.

Some suggestions for making your new apartment feel like home

  • Get something to make the place smell good. A lot of people forget this simple but important element. Your eyes aren’t the only things that need to be appeased here – your living space won’t feel like home if it doesn’t smell like it! Considering how easy it is to pick up an air freshener, this should be one of the first things you’ll get done.
  • Start with the most important part of your apartment (to you). It could be your living room area, or your kitchen area, or even your bed. Begin your redecorating with the place where you’ll be staying most often, so that you’ll feel the effects of your efforts quickly.
  • Placement matters. Plan where your utensils and furniture will go, so that everything will feel like they’re right where they’re supposed to be, just like home.
  • Get the right lighting. Set the mood with the right choice of lighting for your rental apartment. Choose something that’s cool to your eyes, but will still provide just the right illumination for your needs.
  • Change the curtains and carpets to designs that are more familiar and appealing. Since these are probably the easiest things to replace in your apartment that would have the most visual impact, it’s a good idea to pick out carpets and curtains to match your preferences.

These are just a handful of suggestions regarding what you can do to feel at home in your rental apartment, while minimizing the possibility of damaging the place or making your eventual departure complicated and messy. Ultimately, go with whatever will make you happy and satisfied. Just as long as it falls within the boundaries of your contract, of course.

How to Pack for Your Upcoming Summer Trip

We know you’re excited to spend your summer enjoying the sights, happenings, and must-visit sites in, near, and around uptown Dallas. Before you even leave your apartment, though, one of the first things you need to consider is how you’ll fit all your stuff when you make the trip.

That’s why we’ve compiled a handful of simple but effective packing tips to make sure that you don’t forget anything you need (or end up lugging around some very heavy bags).

Prepare a list of what you’ll need.

Without a list to guide you, you’ll inevitably end up trying to stuff more things than you’ll actually use inside your bags. Stick to the basics — your toothbrush, your first aid kit, your charger, and so on — and take this opportunity to identify what you WON’T be bringing, so that you won’t suddenly decide to add more to your luggage at the last minute.

Plan what you’ll wear.

More often than not, unprepared travellers end up packing more clothes than they’ll actually be using. Consider the weather when you pack your clothes, and try to stick to a theme (i.e. clothes that work well when you mix and match them).

To save extra space, roll everything instead of folding and piling them on top of each other. Not only will this leave you with more room for your other stuff, but this will also keep your clothes wrinkle-free!

Use ziplock bags for categorizing and organizing.

You can place small objects (such as keys and cards) or electronics (such as wires and phone chargers) inside resealable plastic bags to protect them and keep them in one place (and make them easier to find) during your trip.

Safeguard your stuff from spills with the right packing techniques.

One of the worst things to discover in your luggage is your shampoo or lotion smeared all over your clothes and gadgets because you forgot to spill-proof everything. Take the lid off your bottles and cover the opening of the bottle with cling wrap before screwing the cap back on.

You can also take extra precautionary measures by storing your liquid containers in double-layer plastic bags.

Don’t put your money in your wallet.

Putting your cash and valuables in obvious places is just about the quickest way to get robbed. Instead, be resourceful — use an empty shampoo bottle or lotion container, for instance, to keep your money, so that thieves won’t know what to get from your bag if they ever manage to open it without you knowing.

Think about what you REALLY need to carry on your person.

This is particularly important if you’re going to take a long trip via airplane. Evaluate what you want to include in your carry-on — things that you absolutely need, but also won’t give you a hard time carrying.
Limit your carry-on stuff to your laptop or your preferred handheld entertainment device, a bottle of water, earphones, and a book.

Know exactly what you want to do before you leave.

Do your research! Create a schedule and look up the important places you’ll need to hit up while you’re on your trip. If possible, identify stores, restaurants, medical institutions, and other important landmarks.

Lastly, enjoy your vacation!
