With the entire city of Dallas under a stay-at-home order until at least April 30th, people everywhere are feeling the impact of what a global pandemic can mean to a community. For those living in apartments, there are unique challenges to consider, both in terms of keeping yourself and others safe as well as dealing with being stuck at home for weeks on end. To help you get through this trying time, here are a few tips from our Dallas apartment experts.

 

Follow the rules.

They’ve been shoved down your throat non-stop for months now, and while it may seem a bit over the top, the rules are in place for a reason. Stay home unless you absolutely have to go out (and if you’re sick, don’t go out at all). Wear a face mask and disposable gloves when out in public to prevent transfer. Practice safe social distancing (at least 6 feet). Don’t gather in groups. And for God’s sake, wash your dang hands. If we are going to end this and get back to normal, we all have to do our part.

 

Avoid common areas.

Most luxury Dallas apartments feature a number of common areas where residents can gather, whether it be a pool, a fitness center, a laundry room or a courtyard. Yes, these perks are awesome and part of your rental agreement. But, no, you shouldn’t be using them right now – even if your landlord or property manager is technically allowing it. This virus is no joke and spending time in proximity with others outside of whomever you physically live with will increase your risk as well as the risk to those around you. There will be plenty of time to take advantage of these amenities once all this is over.

 

Be considerate.

We’re all spending more time at home now, and in a large Dallas apartment building, that can mean a lot more potential annoyances. You want to rock out to your favorite jam or binge Tiger King into the wee hours of the morning? Go right ahead. Just be mindful of others who live around you, whether it be your roommates or neighbors upstairs, downstairs or right next door. Recycle.

First and foremost, it should go without saying that recycling is one of the simplest and most effective ways to conserve the environment. Best of all, it won’t cost you a dime. Between packing boxes, scheduling moving and delivery vehicles and remembering the million things you have to do before saying sayonara, relocating can be a real pain. And while we can’t snap our fingers and make all the stress magically disappear (sorry), we can provide some sound advice to help make the process as easy and headache-free as possible. Here are a few tips from our Dallas relocation experts.

 

Start early.

There are a ton of things to be done before any move, whether it’s across town or across the country. The first key to reducing your stress levels is to start planning as early as possible. Make a checklist of everything you need to do and by when. Start doing some research and making some calls. Line up any third parties you’ll need (like movers) now, while there’s still plenty of time. The earlier you start getting your ducks in a row, the less chaotic the actual move will be.

 

Create a calendar.

In addition to having a detailed to-do list, you’ll want to set specific dates by which you need to tackle each of those items. We recommend breaking it down and prioritizing it by how far away you are from the actual move. For instance, at eight weeks out you’ll need to give notice at your current place and schedule your moving company. At six weeks, you’ll need to start packing. At four weeks out, you’ll want to change your address with the post office, etc. Not only will doing this ensure that nothing important slips through the cracks, but it’ll save your sanity. In any case, downsizing can help make the process of relocating to Dallas much easier and cheaper – especially if you’re paying the movers by the pound. Hold a yard sale. Sell stuff online. Donate it. Whatever floats your boat – just get rid of it.

 

And last, but certainly not least, try to relax. We know it’s easier said than done, but stressing out won’t help anyone, least of all yourself. Acknowledge that moving in general is almost always a hassle, let alone relocating to a new city or town. When most people think of Dallas, they envision massive highways gridlocked with traffic and other congested big-city scenes. But the DFW area is made up of a number of neighborhoods that are remarkably different from these stereotypes. Some are progressive and eclectic while others are quaint and quiet. The challenge is figuring out which one is the right fit for you. If you’re having trouble deciding, here are five important factors to help narrow your choices.

Atmosphere

First, ask yourself what type of living environment you are most comfortable in? Are you into the nightlife? If so, you’d probably love the urban vibe of Knox-Henderson or Uptown. Looking to settle down and start or raise a family? The suburban Las Colinas or Plano would probably be more your speed. Each Dallas neighborhood has its own unique personality. Learning what sets each of them apart can help you determine which one you’d fit in best with.

Amenities

Next, think about what activities and amenities you’d like to have close to home. For example, if you’re the type who loves to spend the weekends shopping, the West Village area would be an ideal place to reside. Like to dine out a lot? Downtown Dallas is chock full of trendy restaurants representing almost every cuisine on earth. Into art and music? Settling down in the Design District or the Deep Ellum area makes pretty good sense.

Recreation

In stark contrast to the bright lights, big city appeal of Downtown Dallas, many DFW neighborhoods are absolute havens for nature lovers. If you’re into biking or running, Uptown or Oak Lawn offer easy access to the Katy Trail. Similarly, there’s the 200-acre nature preserve in Plano, which is ideal for hiking, cycling or simply taking in some scenic views. And, of course, there’s the beautiful and activity-packed Klyde Warren Park, which meanders through Downtown, Uptown and the Arts District. If you’re the outdoorsy type, choosing a place with plenty of recreational activities is probably a good idea.

Commute

Another important factor to consider when deciding which Dallas neighborhood is the best match for you is the commute. Are you the type who prefers to use your feet to get from point A to point B? If so, a more walkable neighborhood, like Richardson or Oak Lawn, would probably be best. If public transportation is your vibe, your options are many. If your job requires a lot of out-of-town travel, look for an area like the Medical District, which offers easy access to the airport.

Personal Preference/Needs

The last thing to consider is your own personal needs and preferences. Are you a single, ambitious up-and-coming professional who is focused on climbing the corporate ladder? Then the more fast-paced environment of Downtown would probably be the best fit. Conversely, if you’re married and have a family, or have plans to start one soon, a quieter, more laid-back neighborhood with a solid school system, like Highland Park, might be a better choice.
